Localized Spanish C64?
« en: Agosto 10, 2017, 21:18:18 »
Hola a todos,

I just received a localized C64C, which was supposed to be a Spanish version - but while it was bought in Spain, it looks like it is actually a _Portugese_ model - see this website in German: http://www.c-64.org/de/museum.php?auswahl=m1_15
The pictures on the right show a close-up of the altered keys.
How was the situation in Spain? I have heard about the law that forced computer companies to localize small computers - but was this done with the C64?
Cheers,

Bugjam

Hello Bugjam,

Yes it was, this C64C is a spanish edition. In latest times, Commodore launched the "Spanish edition" with the Ñ key in that keyboard position of the picture.

It is an unconfortable position but at least the keyboard had the Ñ key.

Congratulations for your purchase, there are not much Spanish Edition on the market at current days.

OK, thanks a lot for the reply! What confused me is the "ç" on the front side of the key - which is not used in Spanish, right? On the other hand, I miss accented vocals and diacritical "u".
So were all C64 computers sold in Spain the Spanish edition? And if not, how was that possible, if the law was there - they could not just ignore it, or?
Is there any more info on the web about it? Maybe even with Spanish packaging?
I did not buy it myself by the way, but I swapped it for something else, but the one who gave it to me brought it from Spain.

In the early 80's, there was no law that required the inclusion of Spanish characters, so the most of C64 sold in Spain had the US keyboard. I don't remember the date in wich the current law come into force, but I guess that it was in the late of 80's or early 90's

Aaaah ok, that explains a lot.
A letter for Catalan, and because it was already quite late in the life of the C64, it was not sold in high numbers.
Thanks a lot!

The vocals with accent or diacritical have no special keys in spanish keyboards, it is used a dead key before the vocals.
